That was a *really* nice piece.
As a professional copyeditor, proofreader, and writer, I endorse everything you wrote.
The only thing I have to add is that, nowadays, with things so very digital and everyone multitasking, I find that the distinction between proofreading and copyediting blurs and one often ends up being a proofreading copyeditor (or vice versa).
As for myself, it becomes a matter of principle to not let anything slip through the cracks.

The easiest way would be to create a profile on a site like Upwork that showcases your experience. You may consider setting your rates on the lower side for a few gigs to gain experience with how their system works/earn reviews from clients and then steadily raise them to be more in line with your worth. (Don’t hugely undercut yourself, but it may be easier to find that first 1-2 gigs in that way). Once you have a few dozen hours of work under your belt [and a few good ratings], optimizing your profile to stand out in search will help you land more gigs.

That said, if it’s a serious ambition/you have a small amount of disposable income, the training classes mentioned in this article will help you scale the gig/find clients much easier. They teach systems for managing a freelance business + help you think of places/give you scripts for landing higher-paying, retainer-like clients.

Hope that helps!

It is great because I don’t have to endure the redundant background information common in other writing. These works offer cutting edge breakthrough knowledge that is addicting. Is that enough to draw writers to me as a proofreader?

I am grateful for the information you have shared. I really need to find some work proofreading online. I have been out of work for almost 7 years caring for my son who has autism spectrum disorder. It would be nice to be able to earn some income too and be helpful economically.

Thanks,
Lynn

Hey Shereece!

If you’re looking to get started, the most simple way is to create a profile in sites such as Upwork, Freelancer, and Fiverr and start to apply for already existing jobs on those platforms.

There’s actually dozens of websites you can look for jobs on but those are 3 of the biggest.

If you think you’d benefit from some training/tips to find and get high-paying clients, you may want to take a course — there are some really good ones out there from $10-$200 (and are usually well, well worth the investment if you’re serious about doing this a good bit in your spare time).

Good luck!

I’m a paralegal and am very interested in becoming a freelance proofreader. I do this most days at my job anyway so why not make extra money to support my family with it? Please help, thanks!
